On February 28 in the “Todor Borov” hall of the National Library “St. St. Cyril and Methodius” the seventh “Ethno-Cafe” took place under the project “United in Difference”. At the previous event in December, the directory “Who’s who in the Armenian community in Bulgaria – figures of culture, art and science”, published by the National Library, prepared under activity 7 of the project, was presented.
At the seventh of the “Ethnocafe” events, a new edition of the National Library, produced under activity 6 of the same project, was presented. This is the thematic bibliographic index “Publications from the collection of the National Library “St. St. Cyril and Methodius” for the Armenian, Jewish and Roma ethnic groups”. Through it, the National Library realizes one of the goals set by the project – to popularize the cultures of minority communities and what was created by them and for them.
Some of the compilers of the bibliographic index participated in the event – Assoc. Dr. Krasimira Alexandrova and Dr. Vanya Avramova, and one of the bibliographic editors – Silvia Filipova. Emphasis was placed on the creation of this type of bibliographic indexes and their importance for researchers in general, but also for the three minority groups in particular. The purpose of the publication is to show the coexistence of ethnic cultures in the context of Bulgarian culture.
Prof. Dr. Krasimira Alexandrova spoke about the records included in the publication – a total of 2,459, and emphasized that no such publication has been prepared for the ethnic groups in Bulgaria so far. The bibliographic index published by the National Library is a first step in this direction.
Vanya Avramova outlined the chronological scope of the bibliographic array in the index for the three ethnic groups, which generally covers the period from 1822 to 2023. She also spoke about the teamwork that is an integral part of the compilation of such a complex publication.
Silvia Filipova spoke about the thematic index from her function as its bibliographic editor, who, together with her colleague Yanitsa Ananieva, harmonized records and reviewed de vizu, everything that was necessary. Thus, the important role of the editors for the successful finalization of a publication was highlighted.
The directory is distributed free of charge and the project provides access to its electronic format through the National Library website. It is one of the few cultural institutes that prepare and publish bibliographical references.
At the end of March, the last event of the “Ethnocafe” series will be held, when an edition related to the history of Roma literature will be presented. Its author is Dr. Sofia Zakhova, who is part of the team of the Icelandic project partner – the Vigdís International Center for Multilingual and Intercultural Understanding.
