“Dzhelem, dzhelem”
On April 8, 1971, the First World Roma Congress was held in London. Delegates from 14 countries were participating. There it was decided to use the word “Roma” instead of “tziganes”, “gypsies”, “gitanos”, and “gypsy” in the future. The anthem of the Roma – the song “Dzhelem, dzhelem” by Zarko Jovanović from 1969 and their flag – a blue and green stripe, located horizontally one above the other, and in their center – a red wagon wheel with 16 spokes, was also adopted. The blue color symbolizes the sky and freedom, green – the earth and fertility, and the red wheel – fire, movement, progress.
In 1990, during the 4th World Roma Congress of the International Organization “Romano Union”, a decision was made to declare the day on which the congress opened in 1971 as International Roma Day.
Today, the Roma are the most numerous European minority. Their folklore is an inexhaustible spiritual wealth. An ethnic group with a rich culture and an interesting history, who still greets with “Bakhtalo!”, regardless of what is in his soul.
